Why So Many People in Dubai Struggle With Lower Back Pain

A friend recently joked that living in Dubai means spending half your life sitting down.

You drive to work. Sit through meetings. Grab lunch. Drive home. Relax on the sofa. Before you know it, you’ve spent ten or eleven hours barely moving.

It sounds familiar because, for many people, it is.

Lower back pain has quietly become one of the most common complaints among people living and working in Dubai. It affects young professionals, parents, gym enthusiasts and even people who consider themselves healthy. The frustrating part is that it often seems to appear out of nowhere.

One morning you bend down to tie your shoes and your back “goes.” Or perhaps it starts as a dull ache after a long week at work and gradually becomes something you can’t ignore.

Why is it so common?

Dubai has many things going for it, but our daily routines do not always do our backs many favours.

Long commutes, desk based jobs, frequent flights, working from laptops and hours spent looking at phones all add up. None of these things are necessarily harmful on their own, but together they can leave the joints and muscles of the lower back feeling stiff and overloaded.

Ironically, it is often the people who only exercise once or twice a week who run into trouble. After sitting all week, they suddenly ask their bodies to play football, lift heavy weights or tackle a long hike. Sometimes the back simply is not ready for it.

It is not always a slipped disc

One of the biggest myths is that every episode of back pain means something serious has happened.

In reality, many cases of lower back pain come from irritated joints, strained muscles, reduced mobility or tissues that have become sensitive after being under stress for a long period.

That does not mean the pain is not real. It absolutely is. But it does mean that surgery is rarely the first answer.

Small habits make a bigger difference than most people think

People often search for one magic stretch or the perfect office chair.

Usually, it is the small habits that make the biggest difference.

Standing up every hour. Taking a short walk after lunch. Strengthening your core. Changing position more often instead of trying to sit perfectly all day.

Movement is generally far more valuable than trying to maintain a “perfect posture.”

Knowing when to get it checked

If the pain keeps returning, starts travelling down your leg, affects your sleep or stops you enjoying everyday activities, it is sensible to have it assessed rather than hoping it will eventually disappear.

A good assessment should look beyond where it hurts. Your daily routine, previous injuries, work environment, exercise habits and movement patterns all provide important clues.

Find an experienced chiropractor Dubai is a good place to start. It is worth choosing someone who spends time understanding why your symptoms developed in the first place, rather than simply treating the painful area.

Recovery is rarely about one treatment

People often ask, “What is the best treatment for lower back pain?”

There usually is not one.

For one person it might be improving mobility. For another it could be strengthening weak muscles. Someone else may simply need to move more throughout the day or make a few changes to their workstation.

Hands on treatment, rehabilitation exercises and sensible lifestyle advice often work best when combined, rather than relying on any single approach.

Looking after your back for the long term

The encouraging news is that most people with lower back pain recover well.

The challenge is not usually getting better. It is staying better.

Building strength, keeping active, avoiding long periods without movement and dealing with small problems before they become big ones can all reduce the chances of the pain returning.

After all, your back has to carry you through every commute, every workout, every family holiday and every ordinary Tuesday. It is probably worth looking after it.
